Migration affects everybody either directly or indirectly. In Scotland, there are 457,000 foreign-born residents, nine percent of the population.

This exhibition brings together eleven artists from distinct, ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. It tackles issues with contemporary migration, a complex subject with rapidly growing relevance in the current political climate. The work presented is personal as most of the artists are migrants themselves.

Referencing the title of James Baldwin’s 1962 novel of the same name, the exhibition highlights that for each individual, though they live in the same city, Scotland can become ‘another country’, depending on one’s ethnicity, status and situation.

All sides of the debate are being considered but central to the exhibition are New Scots themselves. The exhibition does not aim to instruct the visitor but rather, encourage discussion and throughout its duration, it offers the opportunity to create sustainable dialogue with audiences that will increase understanding and lead to new insights into community building.

Another Country is a multi-venue research project developed by Euan Gray, Elaine Rutherford and Alberta Whittle.
